Artists: The Group "SPIS" Ekaterina Reznichenko and Tatyana Krylova

Opening: on the 18-th of October (Sunday) at 7 p.m.

The art association SPIS ("The Sand & Scoop Union") was formed in 2003 on the initiative of Katerina Reznichenko (Moscow) and Tatyana Krylova (Saint-Petersburg). During already six years of existence the group has organized variety of appreciable and solid art actions; it has participated in the Moscow International Forum of art initiatives and in the art festival "ARTKLIAZMA". SPIS works with some leading art galleries as well as with the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. The group develops systematically sharply social subjects concerning the clue topics of the day. Cruelty and violence; the international terrorism; religious, ethnic, interpersonal conflicts; totalitarianism; problems of migration, etc. – these are the main themes for the authors of this creative duet.

These problems excite artists, first of all in the aspect of participation of one concrete person in all troubles and collisions of the modern world, which is samely ruthless both for simple inhabitants and immigrants deprived of civil rights, and for powerful politicians. The problem of choice of its own social, religious and national identity, of the place in a society, of its own right to have some individual position – all these aspects serve a source for extremely sharp projects of the group.

In their works, Tatyana Krylova and Katerina Reznichenko use such forms of the modern art as installation, performance, the art action, as well as some interactive forms. The new project of group, "THE THINGS", is consecrated to the everyday life during which one accumulates gradually a large quantity of the necessary and unnecessary things and subjects. Acquisition process tightens more and more, imperceptibly cementing hopes of more comfortable and convenient life in the future, while the past leaves its inheritance in the kind of tons of out-of-date, unnecessary things. One of the parts of this installation is the original monument from these old things, a monument, erected on decay, fragility and uselessness. This monument is subject to destruction, and authors suggest spectators to create, and then to destroy a personal pyramid from their own cargo of the past. Installation is constructed on the interactive technologies. The past holds us strongly and lives its own hidden and not always visible life. In the basic volume of the installation, which is a slightly decayed room, nobody lives in for a long time, except constantly registered unnecessary and thrown things. Like ghosts they have an effect from time to time. . The old jacket waves a sleeve, or the doll moves suddenly, or the old newspaper rustles unexpectedly – the left life draws our attention, winning the right to existence, giving no way to the future. There are many associations, allusions in the project which allow spectator to empathize the performance. The world of things, according to the authors, is reflexion of the world of people in which the aspiration to the future is interfered so often by unnecessary cargo of the past. The use of the effects of light and noise as well as strictly verified composition of the installation helps the spectator to read and experience the authors plan.
